TheatreTECH, an innovative workforce program for youth within Schenectady City School District, offers training in theatre production. The program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in the technical aspects of theatre and live performance. This program can lead to paid job opportunities as technicians for various events at Proctors or other local performing arts venues.

Join Proctors, where the next generation of stars on and off the stage will gain hands-on experience needed to succeed in dozens of career paths in the creative fields. Through HANDS-ON TRAINING in The Adeline Graham Technical Training and Innovation Center (The Addy) and Proctors facilities, students learn about:

  • Scenic Construction and Painting
  • Theatrical Lighting and Projection
  • Stage Audio
  • Costume Design and Construction
  • Properties
  • Stage Makeup
  • Stage and Production Management

Enrollment in this program is based on application and interview.

Crew members will collaborate with the Acting Academy program within the School of the Performing Arts at Proctors to stage their spring musical production, with students operating all technical aspects of the performance. In addition, students will have the opportunity to work on productions by outside performance groups staging their shows in the Addy Theatre, as well as training with professional theatre companies like New York Stage Originals during their multi-week off-Broadway techs.

No experience is required to take part in TheatreTECH. All students ages 14-21 are welcome to learn something new or learn more about the technical side of theatre!

TheatreTECH runs from September – June during the school year and takes place Tuesday to Friday from 4 – 6:15 p.m. Transportation is provided for this program.

The demand for skilled theatre technicians continues to grow. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, Audio and Video technician jobs are projected to grow by 12.9% by 2026.  Additionally, In the Capital Region, Performing Arts employment is up 17.5% over five years (2010-2015), from 3,227 jobs to 3,791 jobs.  Performing Arts is the fastest growing sector of the Capital Region Creative Industries.
